David Denby New York Magazine/Vulture Random spoofers, easily distracted, ZAZ are too devoted to silliness to mount even a sustained parody of movies. Jul 24, 2025 Full Review Nigel Andrews Financial Times The joy of The Naked Gun is its lunatic sobriety. Jul 24, 2025 Full Review Sebastian Zavala Kahn Me gusta el cine It may not be the best of the three (for me), but even after thirty-seven years (!), the first “Naked Gun” is still a memorable and frequently funny comedy, which only begins to fall apart during its third act. Rated: 4/5 Jul 30, 2025 Full Review Andre Dellamorte Collider Director David Zucker (directing solo for the first time) knows what he’s doing and delivers joke after joke after joke after joke. It’s an onslaught of comedy, and though some jokes are misses, the batting average is high. Joshua H. Love these type of movies and this is one of the best! Leslie Nielsen is a true comedy genius Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/31/25 Full Review Travis B The Naked Gun isn’t just a comedy—it’s a perfectly calibrated riot of gags, puns, and slapstick that dares you to breathe between laughs. Directed by David Zucker and starring the inimitable Leslie Nielsen, this 1988 classic redefined spoof cinema with an unapologetically ridiculous, rapid-fire approach to humor that still holds up over three decades later. Nielsen plays Lt. Frank Drebin, a well-meaning but blissfully incompetent detective who somehow stumbles his way through a plot to assassinate Queen Elizabeth II. Plot, however, is hardly the point here. The real genius lies in how the film weaponizes every second of screen time with visual gags, double entendres, and surreal non sequiturs. Blink and you’ll miss a joke—laugh too hard and you’ll miss three more. What sets The Naked Gun apart is its total commitment to the bit. Whether it’s Drebin giving CPR to a mime or delivering the immortal line, “Nothing to see here, please disperse,” while chaos erupts behind him, the film nails its tone with precision. Nielsen’s deadpan delivery is nothing short of comedic alchemy—he sells every absurdity with the gravitas of a Shakespearean monologue, and that contrast is exactly what makes him legendary. The supporting cast—Priscilla Presley, Ricardo Montalbán, George Kennedy—grounds the film just enough while leaning into the madness with surprising grace. And the score by Ira Newborn manages to spoof dramatic crime procedurals without ever feeling like a parody of itself. In short, The Naked Gun isn’t just funny—it’s a masterwork of comedic timing, a benchmark for spoof filmmaking, and a reminder that sometimes, the dumbest jokes are also the smartest. Whether you're watching it for the first time or the fiftieth, it’s a 90-minute laugh marathon that earns every chuckle. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/30/25 Full Review Alec B A brilliantly stupid movie. Zucker, Abrahams, and Zucker remain the undisputed masters of visual comedy. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 07/30/25 Full Review Audience Member Since I am going to the theaters for the new Movie of the Naked gun I though I have to watch every Movie of the Series before I watch the Reboot and even though I watched the original one like 3 years ago, there wasnt much left in my mind, im truly glad I rewatched this movie because this had me laughing the whole time, the jokes are unbeatable and just hilarious. You dont often get Movies that funny as this one, this is by far one of the most hilarious movies I have ever watched, great Jokes and overall a really good Movie as well, im now even more excited for the new one. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/29/25 Full Review Farah R The Naked Gun is unique in its ability to make silly so funny. It’s no easy task to turn goofy spoofs into genuinely funny and entertaining content, so it’s no wonder this noir parody became a classic. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 07/28/25 Full Review Retro's S Funnier than I thought. Creative jokes are a staple of this movie. It has a simple yet effective storyline and delivers a movie that for once, doesn’t feel cliché. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/28/25 Full Review Read all reviews
