George S So it turns out the creators of Servant decided to wrap things up after four seasons and it really shows. Despite the strong cast and beautifully crafted atmosphere, the final season felt rushed and full of plot holes. Events started happening with little logic or buildup, almost like they were just trying to tick boxes and get to the end. For me, the ending was especially disappointing. One of the most important moments like the “fall of Jericho's walls” sequence was reduced to a scream and a vague, underwhelming confrontation. It lacked emotional weight and payoff. What should have been a climax felt more like a messy sprint to the finish line. The actors were outstanding throughout, and the show’s mood and tension were consistently top-notch. But the writing? More holes than a slice of European cheese. A frustrating end to a series that once promised so much. Their trailers portrayed a simple "creepy nanny" theme that had already been done a billion times over by 2019. They also slapped M Night's name on it, despite the fact that he didn't write the show or direct most of its episodes. In 1999, his name meant "A big payoff like the Sixth Sense." By 2019, his name meant "Some of the goofiest dialogue you'll ever hear, don't bother watching." I specifically skipped over it for years because of poor promotions that didn't reveal the show's true tone and because I didn't want to suffer through another M. Night Shyamalan story. I started watching the first episodes in 2023, willing to give it a chance. My plan was, "Well, if it's as bad as The Happening, I'll just stop watching it." I instantly knew M. Night wasn't writing it because the dialogue was competent, the story was mysterious but made sense in context, and no one devolved into insultingly obvious one-liners 10 minutes into the episode. I watched all four seasons. The pacing was incredible. They did in 30 minutes of episode time what most shows can't do in a 1.5 hour finale. Every moment counted. Anyway, if you've put off watching this show, give it a try. It's one of those shows where you'll have many interpretations about what the Nanny actually is. If you view her as a child-victim of a cult, it's a tragedy. If you view her as evil, it's a horror story. If you view her as what I did - a really young guardian angel who doesn't understand the rules because she's a teenager - you'll view the story as both a tragedy and horror story. You can also view it from different perspectives. From Dorothy's perspective, the whole thing is a horror show. Ignore Apple's botched marketing and M. Night's name and enjoy this one freely. It's one of those shows you'll want to go back and re-watch and that you can really analyze later on. Interestingly, M. Knight's daughter is extremely talented, too, and wrote the teleplay for 10 of the episodes. M. Knight is brilliant, I'm not trying to put him down here, but age dulls the senses. E.g. Rod Serling's Twilight Zone vs Rod Serling's Night Gallery. Ishana Shyamalan's episodes were brilliantly written and directed. I look forward to seeing her name in more projects.
