What to Know

Critics Consensus

A slick and schematic adaptation of Stephen King's novel, The Institute won't keep everyone committed but still offers up enough intrigue to merit a tour.

Lucy Mangan Guardian The Institute might have made for some perfectly serviceable fun for the early-adolescent demographic. As things stand, it’s hardly fun at all. Rated: 2/5 Jul 17, 2025 Full Review David Opie Empire Magazine Despite all its flaws, The Institute is still enjoyable in its pulpy sensibility. With engaging twists and a strong teen cast, the result is an easygoing summertime horror fix that amounts to more than just MGM+'s answer to Stranger Things. Rated: 3/5 Jul 15, 2025 Full Review Ben Travers IndieWire “The Institute” can feel refreshing when its throwback style meshes with its timeless principles. Unfortunately, ordinary ideas aren’t enough in a show lacking anything extraordinary whatsoever. Rated: C- Jul 14, 2025 Full Review Zosha Millman IGN Movies The Institute has the glimmer of what makes a Stephen King story great, but with none of the polish or shine to make it happen. Rated: 4/10 Jul 24, 2025 Full Review Ty'Kira Smalls Common Sense Media It's not hard for a promising psychological sci-fi series like this to get lost in its own details Jul 23, 2025 Full Review George White Cultured Vultures The Institute also feels like a unique experience in and of itself, bringing a more solemn, less Spielbergian tone to proceedings that allows the series to head more quickly to sinister places. Ed O The cool premise (aka Stephen King's original story) is quickly worn to threads by unnecessarily stretching every episode - and thus literally every single action taken - into eternity. I assume that, if edited down to half of each's episode's runtime, this could be a cool series. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 07/30/25 Full Review Audience Member I’ve seen many TV shows, but none of them have made me keep up with them while it’s airing. It’s been like that for a long time. Basically, I really hope this doesn’t end up being a one season thing. I definitely want to see more seasons. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/29/25 Full Review Jens S. One episode and I was hooked...I only wish I could binge watch the whole thing now! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/29/25 Full Review Endika V I read the book and loved it, I am glad they make the show, it's a must see for all that did not read the book, the young actors did a fantastic job. I look forward to see how they're career goes. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/28/25 Full Review Johan J I like the novel and really wanted to like this show. But the problem is that the changes they have made just make the whole story uninteresting and unappealing. The acting doesn't really give a reason to stick around either, so I'm giving up after the 4th episode. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 07/27/25 Full Review Kerry D It blows my mind that screen writers think they can do better than Stephen King. Why change it? The story was perfect. I'm on episode 3 of season 1 and already disappointed they didn't stick to the story. Most of the characters are actually the saving grace of the program. Tip? Don't mess with the master's work.
