TWISTED METAL, a half-hour live-action TV series based on the classic PlayStation game series, is a high-octane action comedy about a motor-mouthed outsider offered a chance at a better life, but only if he can successfully deliver a mysterious package across a post-apocalyptic wasteland. With the help of a badass axe-wielding car thief, he’ll face savage marauders driving vehicles of destruction and other dangers of the open road, including a deranged clown who drives an all too familiar ice cream truck.

Critics Consensus

An enjoyable blast of cartoonishly violent mayhem, Twisted Metal sometimes struggles to flesh out its source material, but ultimately offers an adaptation with surprising depth.

Dan Einav Financial Times An assault on the senses and the intellect, Twisted Metal is one for the scrapyard. Rated: 2/5 Mar 25, 2024 Full Review Ed Power Daily Telegraph (UK) It could have been a car crash. Instead, it’s an enjoyably breakneck whoosh through the A-Z of dystopian sci-fi cliches. Rated: 4/5 Mar 22, 2024 Full Review Brian Tallerico The Playlist There might have even been a better version of this show that wasn’t scared to really center Stu as the lead. Rated: C- Aug 8, 2023 Full Review Erin Maxwell LA Weekly/Village Voice Its not so much an adaptation as it is an introduction for those who never played the game. The first season is a reworking of the story for a bigger picture. If the series continues, there’s a lot of promise that die-hard fans will be rewarded. Aug 18, 2023 Full Review Jeremy Jahns JeremyJahns.com It does feel like it comes from a place of and a labor of love. Aug 11, 2023 Full Review Tessa Smith Mama's Geeky This show is not technically a good one, but it is fun and entertaining and utterly ridiculous. J M. It fills the time, but it’s not very satisfying. if you have some time to kill, the first five episodes aren’t horrible. Though the direction from one episode to the next episode is all over the map, the writing and acting in those five episodes was tolerable. Even that little bit of praise can’t be heaped on episodes 6 through 10. The one bright spot throughout season 1 is the character Sweet Tooth. Joe Seanoa portrays the character with perfection, and Will Arnett gives the perfect voice to Sweet Tooth. The writers and directors likely took inspiration from The Boys, Preacher, and Carnivàle, but they did not capture the twisted magic of those shows. Twisted Metal season 1 could have been so much better, and perhaps in season 2 it will improve. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 07/30/25 Full Review Travis B I really enjoyed this one. While it takes major creative liberties and shares very little with the original source material beyond the name and a few character inspirations, that actually works in its favor. The team behind the show clearly made a conscious decision to reimagine the Twisted Metal universe rather than strictly adapt it, and the result is something surprisingly fun, fast-paced, and unique. Instead of trying to replicate the chaotic car combat of the games beat for beat, the series builds its own quirky, post-apocalyptic world filled with eccentric characters, violent showdowns, and a dark sense of humor. It's more of a road trip action-comedy than a direct adaptation, but it uses those elements to carve out its own identity—and it’s all the better for it. By the end of the season, it smartly circles back to set up the actual premise of the games, making it feel like a long, entertaining origin story for what’s to come. If you’re expecting a 1:1 recreation of the games, you might be disappointed—but if you’re open to something new that captures the spirit more than the structure, this is a wild ride worth taking. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/30/25 Full Review Jacob F. Good vibes, cars exploding and great comedy been ready for this more then Captain America 4 sadly. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/30/25 Full Review Cordelia A Unexpected comedy banger. Critics are a mile off on this one. Anthony Mackie is perfect for the role.
