Critics Consensus

This jukebox musical is full of fluffy fun but rough singing voices and a campy tone might not make you feel like "You Can Dance" the whole 90 minutes.

Deborah Ross The Spectator Mamma Mia has been made with the most delicious, joyful abandon and all it asks is that you joyfully and deliciously abandon yourself to it and don't make too many observations. Aug 23, 2018 Full Review Nell Minow Movie Mom Rated: B+ Feb 18, 2012 Full Review Peter Bradshaw Guardian The story is ... urh. No film has ever had a more irrelevant story. Rated: 1/5 Oct 18, 2008 Full Review Mary Kassel Screen Rant Part of the reason we still talk about Mamma Mia! is the fact that it's a chaotic explosion, which elevates the magic & romance of the story. Rated: 5/10 Jul 16, 2025 Full Review Annlee Ellingson CineWomen An experienced, award-winning theater and opera director, Phyllida Lloyd exerts keen control of the film’s energy, if not its specious plot. Jul 28, 2024 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review The film’s greatest pleasures derive from the star factor. Namely, Meryl Streep. Is there anything this woman can’t do? Flory Love this movie, this was my best Mothers Day ! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/15/23 Full Review Melissa Loved getting to watch one of my favorite movies in the theatre again!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/10/23 Full Review Rishi this movie was for the gays and for the gays only Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/07/22 Full Review Kar L First half is so sloooow. Streep seems obviously miscast, especially when there was so much middle aged musical and dance talent in Hollywood. Amanda Seyfried is delightful, and the scenes with her and cast mates her age save the musical numbers. As does the classic Abba music. Second half picks up energy wise... although the plot remains sort of absurd. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 07/28/25 Full Review Anna K One of my favorite movies ever!! It has such a nostalgic kick to it and the music scenes are the best. I would recommend it to literally anyone Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/26/25 Full Review lucia v One of the best musicals out there, the songs are all extremely good, there is not a single song that I consider bad. The actors are very good and their acting is impeccable. The reason why I don't give it 5 stars is because I feel that the story is a bit lost or feels empty, I feel that they don't give so much focus to the conflict of the story if not more to the musical part, that yes, I understand that it is a movie of the musical genre and the songs are a big part of the story in this type of films, but still I feel that the songs should accompany the story going to it more to background even, not overshadow it looking more like a concert than a movie. While I repeat, the songs are very enjoyable, they are also very excessive having a new song every second which lasts several minutes each, and not giving much space to the background of the story, leaving the resolution very rushed and not being able to connect well with it. For example, La la land is another musical of this style which, yes, has its great musical part (not as excellent as Mamma Mia, but musical nonetheless) but at the same time allows you to connect with the story of the film, with the characters and their conflicts, and allows the development of this same, I felt that this was what Mamma Mia lacked to be 5 stars. Still, it will always be a highly recommended film, one of the best of its genre and one that does a good job as a musical film. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/25/25 Full Review Read all reviews
