Sovereign Reviews
So thoughtful and well executed. Oscar worthy!
It's a decent movie but not great. I don't know if Dennis Quaid is just too old to act now, but some of his scenes (that are supposed to be intense or harrowing) were unintentionally funny because of his bad acting. You could cut every scene of his and the movie would be better for it.
What a waste of my time and money. Quaid was horrible. It was so slow.
I’m not driving, I’m traveling…
Pretty depressing and slow moving. I realize they are trying to show how the dad manipulated the kid but I feel they could have made it more interesting. Find it hard to believe this has 94% on rotten tomatoes
It was OK, but not a wow or even good. The subject matter while controversial and gets clicks, in the end is meh …….
Captivating and intense, character driven story.
Awesome movie. Very close to the real story, with few literary licenses taken; the performances of the entire cast are top notch, especially the two leads. It’s thrilling, it’s emotional, it will keep you engaged throughout and the political passions of the main character from real life are portrayed masterfully by Nick Offerman. It’s worth the hour and forty minute watch for that alone, 4.5/5 Do not lookup the story until after, trust me
You can tell the quality of the movie you’re watching by how it makes you feel. This movie will make you feel something, that’s for sure. Nick Offerman was something else. Jerry Kane is deeply flawed. Offerman crushed this role. The cast was excellent. Honestly, I’d be surprised if there isn’t awards buzz for the movie. It was profound, gripping, and well done. Well worth the watch.
Christian Swegal's directorial debut is truly encouraging, delivering a highly political thriller based on a true story about "Sovereign Citizens." A raw, intelligent, and highly political thriller that won't be to everyone's taste, but is well worth a chance. The film solidifies its cast, especially Nick Offerman, who delves into his dramatic side in a highly developed and masterfully performed role. A character study that takes us on a journey through an extremist capable of dominating everything around him. We also find Jacob Tremblay, who reconnects with all the dazzling talent he gave us in The Room, and here he once again sustains a film with his sheer acting and stage talent. The work also involves supporting actors such as Dennis Quaid, Thomas Mann, and Martha Plimpton, who do not lose the interpretive power of their two protagonists. It's a raw, slow-burning thriller. In the first half, we empathize and even understand certain aspects of the protagonist's debate, and in the second half, everything explodes, shattering all that empathy with a heartbreaking climax. Its director and screenwriter invite us to reflect on the extremism of the new right in a compelling film that fits precisely with the current global times. This intense thriller is worth your time. It may not be entirely perfect, but it's daring, thoughtful, and uncomfortable, providing an addictive watch with all its strengths and weaknesses, but establishing one of those films that hopefully won't be forgotten in a rather interesting 2025.
This is film is so brilliantly done. There are two sides of every story and to tell it so well without taking a side is not easy. The movie explains how people on either side are in fact only human in the end. The acting is astounding and hopefully an award nomination will come. Bravo to all
This is a must watch! A story that lingers with you and genuine emotionally honest acting that brings the characters to life.
This film takes an incredibly unique approach to a topic rife with opportunities to derail the message. The director presents without judgment, a feat that can only be accomplished through the incredible artistry of the cast. It really is a must see. If you’re a person concerned with deep cultural divides prevalent in countries worldwide, and particularly in the US, the filmmaker presents a solution. Empathy, the most difficult and uniquely human gesture one can offer to those with whom you disagree.
I went into this film not knowing the story or what a sovereign citizen was but boy did I learn! I would be shocked if Nick Offerman didn't get an Oscar Nomination for this film. Jacob Trembley was pretty damn good, too. It is extraordinarily powerful and an important film to watch. It took place in 2010 but it feels very timely with the way our world has become. Highly recommended!
Incredible slow build into a tense finale
The acting was well done and intense. It is unfortunate that these sovereign citizen think that this is their right. It is all too real.
While the film is generally terrific, as is the cast, it could benefit from a little backstory. It would be good to know how Jerry & Joe got to the point where their mortgage is being foreclosed on, for instance. They must have been paying the mortgage for years and then suddenly stopped. Why? Also, a bit more of slow build up to showcase how the main character, Kerry Kane, got to the point of madness he is at in the beginning of the film.
For anyone who loves tense, emotional, character-driven films from the 90s and say "why don't they make movies like this anymore?" Well, they just did. And you'll love it.
not much of a fan of audit/sovereigns videoing about being on the sidewalk/public places but we DO obviously live in a 2 tiered justice system. the judge absolutely won't hear his claims and does vacate the court. the banking system is corrupt and we are 37 trillion in debt, there just might be trouble. you can watch this.
Based on a true, tragic story. The less you know going in, the better, in my opinion. Three things really stood out to me: First, the performances of Nick Offerman and Jacob Tremblay were just incredible. Second, the climax of the film (and of the real story) was shot remarkably well, for any budget level. And finally, I appreciate that the film doesn’t tell you what to think about the characters or their actions. It just shows you the events and allows you to make your own decisions and come to your own conclusions. In summary, Sovereign is a very powerful and emotional film. It’s a bit of a gut punch, but in a good way. I can’t imagine watching it in a theater and not feeling closer to your fellow audience members than when you came in. Like you’ve really been through something together. And I can’t wait to watch it again.
