Materialists Reviews

Jul 30, 2025

If it wasn't for Pedro Pascal I would not watch it. What is that...

It is like a fairytale, with very basic characters playing extremely rich and extremely poor. The end was predictable, even though some of the dialogues were deep.

It felt really flat.

I don't know that I am capable of giving the movie a fair rating when it lied on its own the dating profile. It told me it was a rom-com and there's no way to even conceive of that being anything but a lie. But the fact that it uses sexual assault as a plot device after the audacity of claiming it's a "funny" movie is unforgiveable. The only funny parts are the montages of her silly clients making silly comments about what they want in a partner and that's probably less than five minutes of movie time total. God bless those who watch this on streaming without ever having seen the trailer because they will be able to evaluate it for what it is - which is probably a decent drama but whoooo boy. Don't tell me it's a comedy and then use sexual assault as a major plot device. That's a surefire way to piss me off.

A sharp examination of dating culture and the pursuit of what we think will bring us happiness. Both grounded and hopeful, a great film that feels very Celine Song.

I went into this movie after reading tons of reviews, and honestly, I was both intrigued and intimidated by how divided the reactions were. But here's the thing: Materialists isn’t trying to please anyone. It doesn’t care what you want to hear — and that’s exactly what makes it powerful. This movie steps on a lot of nerves, unapologetically. Whether you’re rich or poor, a hopeless romantic or a hardcore materialist, it will hit you somewhere personal. It challenges everyone, and it does so with intention. And you know what? I loved that about it. I admire how bold it is — not just in what it says, but in how it says it. It’s provoking, uncomfortable, and honest in a way most films shy away from. If you’re looking for something that will challenge your perspective rather than comfort it, Materialists is absolutely worth your time.

It was decent up until Pedro was gone

Very good romantic comedy, with some funny moments, and an entertaining plot. The characters, played by Pedro Pascal, Dakota Johnson, and Chris Evans, played a huge part in making this movie flourish. Their acting skills, and characters they portrayed was very well thought out and developed.

This trash movie was clearly written by AI.

A movie in which you have to find humor in the silence, common sense in the supporting characters, and latch on to the attractiveness of the actors. Not the best drama of the year, not the worst. Simply put, we love Pedro Pascal.

“Materialists Made Me Lose Faith in Film — And Possibly Humanity” If cinematic crimes were punishable by law, Materialists would be serving a life sentence without parole. This movie isn’t just bad—it’s a jaw-dropping, soul-draining, migraine-inducing disaster that somehow managed to insult my intelligence, waste my time, and ruin my evening in a tight 90-minute window. Calling this film “shallow” would be a compliment. Shallow implies there’s some surface—Materialists is a black hole of meaning, depth, or even basic coherence. It’s like someone tried to make a satire of influencer culture but got distracted halfway through by their own reflection and forgot to write an actual movie. The acting? Embarrassing. Every line delivery was so awkward, I genuinely felt secondhand shame for everyone involved. It was like watching mannequins try improv. No one had chemistry. No one had range. Some didn’t even seem conscious. I’ve seen more believable performances in a mall perfume kiosk. As for the plot… What plot? Things just happen—or more accurately, don’t happen. It’s like someone shuffled a stack of luxury brand commercials, slapped on a couple of bland voiceovers, and called it a screenplay. The story goes nowhere. Characters make decisions for no reason. Conflicts disappear into thin air. Watching this film is like staring at an expensive, slow-moving train wreck: shiny, loud, and completely devoid of purpose. Visually, it tries so hard to look "aesthetic" that it forgets to be watchable. Every shot screams, “Please post me on Instagram!” but nothing serves the story—because there is no story. It’s just empty glamor, shallow dialogue, and vibes so hollow you could echo inside them. By the end, I was actively angry. Not just disappointed—furious. Furious that someone funded this. Furious that a team of people edited this and said, “Yeah, that’s the one.” Furious that I gave even a second of my life to this monument of mediocrity. Materialists is not a film. It’s a punishment. A cautionary tale of what happens when style eats substance, chokes on it, and dies in a pool of fake tears and filtered lighting. Negative stars. I would rather chew tinfoil while watching paint dry than endure this mess again.

Just my kind of movie with great actors.

stupid movie. the reason why teenage pregnancy keeps skyrocketing.

Rate: 4/10 As a well diverse yet brilliant cast the plot alone had the lack luster than failed to capture most of my attention. Chris and Dakota have great chemistry as well as Pedro, yet nothing could make the plot of a matchmaker falling in love stand out more against the brick wall it constantly collided with.

Entertaining! Perfect chic flick. Great Movie! #Dakota Johnson just looks so pretty. Pedro Pascal character proved that unicorns do not exist, no matter if you think they do. Chris Evans is any of us… that can do much better, because love is all we need. Finally a movie to relax… 10 out of 10. #DakotaJohnson #PedroPascal #ChrisEvans #AllWeNeedisLove

Unnecessarily long scenes, hard to connect to characters, predictable ending.

Lol kes the movie but Pascal, a tiny, unattractive (to me) leading man with his Frito Bandito mustache doesn't do it for me. Miscast.

Materialists is a sharp, stylish meditation on love, wealth, and emotional detachment in the modern age. Director Celine Song (Past Lives) trades melodrama for minimalism, crafting a quietly provocative story that lingers long after the credits roll. Dakota Johnson delivers a graceful, restrained performance as a woman torn between security and sincerity, while Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal add quiet gravitas in supporting roles. Though its pacing may test some viewers, the film’s emotional clarity and thematic ambition make it a compelling exploration of what—and who—we truly value.

Very Boring and bad writing

This was better than I expected but I knew going into it that it wasn't a romantic comedy. I wasn't crazy about the casting of Chris Evans. I think they could have picked someone better for the part. Worth a rental.
