Seinfeld: Season 4 Reviews

Breakthrough hit? Breakthrough hit? The sorry state of network prime-time series comes down to this: This season's breakthrough hit premiered all of three years ago.

What a liberating perspective; as long as you're going to get canceled anyway, you might as well do the show you want to do.

There's nothing wrong with nothing, as long as there's something to it. And Seinfeld is a successful series because it's wonderful at making something out of nothing.

Full Review | Jul 30, 2025

The funniest series on television keeps getting better. Ostensibly a program "about nothing", Seinfeld is, in fact, a comedy about everything.

Full Review | Jul 30, 2025

The brilliance of Seinfeld is that it's about something, but with the ease of nothing.

The funniest neurotic comedy you'll ever find.

This is as funny as "nothing" gets.

Barring an unlikely outbreak of hugging and learning, this remains one of the few shows worth making it a point not just to turn on but to stop everything to watch.

Seinfeld was famously dextrous in the ways it was able to talk about sex with remarkable frankness while still completely avoiding all of the language land mines... "The Contest" is a master class in this kind of thing.

Full Review | Aug 26, 2019

["The Contest"] is still great 25 years later, an example of boundary-pushing comedy writing that feels fresh... This is an episode all about delayed pleasure that is pleasing from beginning to end.

The fourth season of Seinfeld is the crown of the series for two reasons. The first is that is gave us a legendary episode that instantly cemented itself in pop culture history. Secondly, it featured the show's best and most daring story arc.

Full Review | Aug 26, 2019

Season four is Seinfeld at its funniest and most inventive. Nearly every episode is a timeless classic and the meta storyline with Jerry's fictional show is nothing short of brilliant.

Full Review | Aug 26, 2019

The 1992-93 season was when things all came together for Seinfeld, so much so that the show's fourth season should be considered the best season any sitcom has ever had.

Full Review | Sep 5, 2018

Each hour in Season 4 pokes fun at the nature of television in general and, specifically, getting a TV show made, so it's got plenty of in-jokes for people in the biz. But there's also a lot to like outside of the main storyline.

The [season] that established Jerry Seinfeld as the Master of His Domain and hooked the nation on a show about nothing.

Full Review | Aug 30, 2018

I knew it already, but watching the whole of season four over the last couple of months has reinforced for me just how incredible a season of TV it is. There's no dud episode, there are so many great recurring characters...

Full Review | Aug 30, 2018

Quite aside from the fact that, snicker for snicker, belly laugh for belly laugh, it's probably the funniest show on television, Seinfeld is also one of the purest of all TV-viewing pleasures.

Full Review | Original Score: b+ | Aug 30, 2018

A growing level of acerbic confidence that ramped up the high concepts.

Full Review | Original Score: 5/5 | Jul 6, 2018

It's [the] second storyline that takes the most turns in Larry David and Peter Mehlman's witty script, filled with amusing detail.

Full Review | Feb 16, 2018

Jerry exposes life's little absurdities -- and just a little of himself -- in a smart and stylish sitcom.
