A Minecraft Movie Reviews

Whether you’ve never touched a controller or spent hours punching trees for wood, this film builds something special. Just don’t expect to leave without humming a Minecraft tune.

There’s a version of A Minecraft Movie that could’ve been brilliant.

I find it extremely difficult to review a film as unique as A Minecraft Movie. How does one approach a movie that takes so much joy in being a blatant cash grab?

At the end of the day, A Minecraft Movie is like the best kind of DIY project: it might be held together with duct tape and glitter, but it’s made with love—and that’s more than I can say for half the blockbusters out there.

...this film is also a kind of homage to The Wizard of Oz (1939), which is also about a character who gets sucked into a magical land and has to find her way home.

I was surprised at how funny it got, which led me to fall for numerous jokes that caught me off-guard, but would sometimes feel intense dread as Black kept singing, and the climax of this entire non-event is a beam that opens a portal in the sky.

A movie that is guilty of all video game adaptation sins... but, thankfully, Jack Black and Jason Momoa attempt to save the day.

Full Review | Original Score: 3/5 | Jul 2, 2025

A joyless, clumsy mess that does nothing to capture the magic of the phenomenon it’s based on. The film frequently confuses wacky antics for comedy and pop culture game references for story.

Here’s a money machine that, despite its bright CGI palette, feels oddly colorless.

I acknowledge that this movie isn’t exactly for me. But I still see the appeal, much of which is wrapped up in the infectious enthusiasm of Jack Black

Full Review | Jun 27, 2025

It may be appealing enough for young children and fans who are not expecting very much from it, but most others will likely be a little disappointed that they didn't try a little harder when it came to telling a more creative story.

Once our party heads into the Minecraft world, the formula begins to wear thin but the off-kilter humor works well throughout. If nothing else, it's much better than it needed to be and I appreciate the effort rather than just cashing a huge check.

Jack Black is pure pixelated chaos — and I mean that as a compliment.

Full Review | Original Score: 3/5 | May 23, 2025

I admit to laughing out loud several times, at Coolidge’s loony line readings, and the moment when Black starts singing unprompted and Myers rolls her eyes and sighs like, oh god, not this again.

While it might be slightly shrieky, this videogame adaptation, with its bright, buzzy palate and merry band of misfits, is a goofy way to pass time

Full Review | May 16, 2025

The real star of the show, and the only thing that makes A Minecraft Movie something other than an wildly successful corporate branding exercise, is Jack Black as Steve, one of the skins players can choose to represent themselves on the map.

Surprisingly fun film that kids and teens will love. Full of in-game references and phrases, visually, this is an interesting experience. Momoa is a standout in a film that isn't great, but still offered a fun enough time at the movies

Full Review | May 8, 2025

Hess’ film contains some entertaining moments, occasional jolts of energy that break up the perfunctory one-liners and endless blur of lifeless explosions, but not enough to prevent the final experience from becoming utterly forgettable.

Full Review | May 7, 2025

While it offers lots of visual wows and shout-outs to those in the know, the movie really works because of the absurd macho competitiveness-turned-bromance between Jack Black and Jason Momoa.

[T]he movie has a frenetic energy that feels like it can’t pause to let any moment or plot development breathe, lest the audience get bored.
