28 Years Later Reviews

bloody, brutal, and in parts surprisingly beautiful ... 28 Years Later proves most memorable and elegiac in its quieter moments.

Full Review | Jul 31, 2025

28 Years Later is often jaw-dropping to look at, it’s got a strong commitment to its thematic and emotional core, and it more than satisfies the base pleasures of its genre.

Alex Garland’s script balances post-apocalyptic terror with a moving coming-of-age story. A boy’s journey through grief, survival, and the ghosts of Britain’s past delivers one of the most haunting sequels in modern horror.

It’s a mixed bag — messy in parts, bold in others — but rarely dull. Boyle and Garland are clearly building toward something larger, and while this opening chapter stumbles, it sparks enough curiosity to stay invested.

As George Romero taught us, the real villains are always the humans

Full Review | Jul 25, 2025

Chaotic, cathartic, creepy, and strange, but very, very satisfying. Some choices won't work for all but they did for us. Boyle pushed the series into new territories whilst delivering one of the best horrors of 2025.

It may not be the original 28 Days Later, but 28 Years Later still delivers poignant human stories splattered in brain matter.

Full Review | Original Score: 3/5 | Jul 23, 2025

28 Years Later is a bold but mismatched return to the franchise, often feeling like it never quite ramps up to 11 in any of the elements it dabbles in throughout its runtime.

...Boyle does breathe new life into the undead.

Full Review | Original Score: 3/4 | Jul 23, 2025

28 Years Later shows a way forward for franchises that isn’t dead boring, but it is still guilty of setting up future films in the franchise rather than just telling a good story itself.

28 Years Later ... offers so much more than horror-movie mayhem. Yes, it’s scary as hell. ... But it’s also a brilliant coming-of-age drama ... a profound, heartbreaking meditation on death, and ... briefly, a rousing, somewhat comical ... action film.

Too academic as well as too sentimental perhaps, but Fiennes’s performance as the eerie doctor, creator of an intense, eccentric heart of resistance when resistance is always too late, helps to carry the day.

Boyle and Garland’s neatest trick is the sharp turn in the movie’s second half, as they strip out the horror elements and plunge us into a surprisingly tender drama about love and grief.

Full Review | Original Score: 3.5/4 | Jul 18, 2025

One of the most wonderful actors of his generation, even entering the narrative so late in the story, Fiennes still succeeds in making audiences think he was there from the beginning.

Rock ‘n’ roll Danny Boyle is back!

Full Review | Original Score: B+ | Jul 17, 2025

The film makes bold choices, including an ending that will leave more than a few viewers speechless.

Boyle and Garland return with a gripping, visually striking sequel. Jodie Comer and Alfie Williams bring emotional depth to a post-apocalyptic story that smartly expands the universe, despite a few weak subplots.

...for those craving an artistic take on the zombie plague and a rich narrative filled with emotional nuance, 28 Years Later is among the best zombie media.

This was a decent movie but there's way too many unanswered questions that will hopefully be addressed in future entries. However, I thought the horror aspects, action scenes, and performances were very strong.

Despite some pacing issues and a very odd ending, I really enjoyed some of the performances and thought the cinematography was beautiful. There's a lot more to like than dislike with this.
