I Know What You Did Last Summer Reviews

Treading a fine line between nostalgia and unoriginality.

The decision to reboot this D-list slasher series in 2025 is a telltale sign that Hollywood is giving new meaning to scraping the bottom of the barrel.

We're living in a very good time for new slasher stories, and this is the latest addition to an impressive contemporary roster.

A slick but forgettable throwback to the days when stalkers were in vogue again. However, whether you’ll remember what they did next summer is another question.

These characters are uninteresting and some of the dumbest people I've seen in a horror movie in a long time.

It wouldn't have taken much to be the best film in this franchise but this legacy sequel falls FAR short of that. Gen Z rehashes of the original cast go out in uninspired kill scenes while our legacy characters deliver exposition & anger-inducing twists.

It’s a sort of Scream and Scooby Doo hybrid and isn’t (and wasn’t ever) as good as either but is still passable slasher fun that has a bunch of predictable elements but still a few tricks up its sleeve.

... gnarly and bloody at times, but also easy to consume ...

The kills are not really all that interesting and, honestly, I'm not sure that you'd want to spend that much time with the set of friends either.

I Know What You Did Last Summer is full of characters played by actors who look like other actors from films we watched years ago but actually enjoyed.

So, so bad. Awful dialogue, paper-thin characters, weak setups, no tension or scares. The returning characters were treated with a holy reverence that felt wholly unearned, and it was all just a waste of time. Cline, Wonders, and Withers tried their best.

Considering most horror films are quick and dirty, this one rambles on longer than it should.

'I Know What You Did Last Summer' shares the exact same DNA as its predecessor, but it’s a fun slasher in its own right.

"Less a slasher and more a parody, it winks at the genre without fully embracing its thrills."

I Know What You Did Last Summer isn’t an untouchable franchise – far from it, given the “Ben’s son!” and Jack Black dreadlocks of it all – [...] but, on this evidence, there are some exciting places it could go next.

A few casting cameos from the original might tweak a nostalgic pang or two, but there’s no crime in waiting for this sluggish effort to show up on home streaming.

It’s hard to get attached to any of these main characters when they speak entirely in Gen-Z buzzwords rather than like human beings.

Full Review | Original Score: 3/10 | Jul 23, 2025

If it was possible to create a slasher mystery lamer than the original and even dumber than its theatrical sequel well then mission accomplished.

Full Review | Original Score: 0.5/4 | Jul 23, 2025

Although some reviews may say differently, I Know What You Did Last Summer is actually a lot of fun and a welcome addition to the franchise. Yes, of course there are a few flaws, but let’s be honest, the original was never perfect to begin with.

IKWYDLS is so busy cashing in on 90s nostalgia that it forgets to craft characters that matter and tests the boundaries of suspended disbelief. The kills somehow end up squandering the increased gore and suspense over the first film.
