Paul J Perfect for a Sunday night in and exceeded my expectations. Have tissues ready! Loved the kids, especially Mila Jankovich as Mabel. She could carry a BJ number 5! The first one was and still is perfect: 10 out of 10, the 2nd one bad, 4 out of 10. Nr 3 was OK, 7/10. But this one is the worst: 1/10. Obviously they tried very hard imitate scenes from the first part, like the garden party etc. but failed very much. The only good thing is that I passed on this one in the cinemas and waited to see it for free when I could stream it. While this film is a charming romantic comedy, it was also incredibly profound which really caught me off guard. Exploring Bridget's life after the death of Mark Darcy was handled beautifully and creates a stunning film about how to continue on with life after an awful event. With many of our favourite characters returning and finally Hugh Grant appearing again Mad About The Boy is a stunning final chapter for Bridget. I’m usually able to sit through most films and get a good grasp of the characters, motivations, through-lines, and overall plot—but this one was a struggle. My partner recommended it, and even though I was hesitant at first, she has a knack for getting me emotionally invested in things I’d normally have no interest in. (Gilmore Girls still haunts me.) Knowing this, I gave the film an honest try—but within 10 minutes, it was clear that it had little to offer beyond its premise and the draw of a recognizable name. This was a boring, soulless film with nothing meaningful to say. Although it doesn’t seem that way initially: a woman grappling with the challenges of raising a family after losing her partner, and navigating the desire to be loved and desired again. That could be compelling. But the film never goes deeper than that surface-level setup. She dates a bit, ends up with a younger man (which doesn’t go well), then inevitably moves on to someone else—and that’s everything. The story is stitched together with tired clichés and flat characters, and the script feels like it was at least 50% written on autopilot. Scene by scene, nothing builds, nothing surprises, and the overall narrative feels recycled and uninspired. If I had to find one silver lining—and I say this with acknowledged bias—it’s Hugh Grant is cool and I love seeing him in anything all the time. Go watch Heretic, it came out the year before and I still think about it to this day. I always try to find something positive to say for everything I watch—highlight some clever idea, thoughtful execution, or unexpected twist. But with this film, that’s difficult. Maybe you’ll find something in it that speaks to you, but in a year filled with strong, standout releases, this one is hard to recommend.
